CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control recently released the Mapping Injury, Overdose, and Violence Dashboard. This useful tool displays timely data on deaths from drug overdose, suicide and homicide, down to the local census tract level, using final and provisional death data received from states.

CDC prioritizes timely, actionable, and local data and this dashboard represents the latest effort to show what’s happening at the community level. The data in the dashboard comes from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS), compiled by CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. NVSS contains information from death certificates completed by state vital records offices, including causes of death reported by attending physicians, medical examiners, and coroners. Importantly, it also shows where a person lived, which may not be the same as where their death occurred—seeing that difference can be of significant help to local community stakeholders.

This new dashboard provides communities with critical insights to guide their opioid abatement funding decisions, allowing them to allocate funds to programs with the greatest potential impact within their own communities.
